If you watched "The Hunt for the Camden Ripper"last night you may have been chilled by the performance of Camden's former chief executive,Erville Millar, who managed to disclaim the slightest responsibility for the Ripper'release and was afterwards actually promtoted to being CE of all Kent. The 240 page "root cause inquiry"says Hardy's care was blame
less when it was clearly abysmal.

MENTAL HEALTH AND THE MEDIA There's nothing as difficult as getting anything in the press, which is why I created this blog.Homicides by mental health patients yes, suicides, except by by the glitterati,no.As for quality of service, forget it.Its a mad state of affairs when 1 in 4 of us will need psychiatric treatment at some stage in our lives.

I'm an unreconstructed Christian socialist so I've no truck with any of the 3 main parties.None seems to have much idea when it comes to mental health.A revised Mental Health National Service frame is desperately needed.Hospital and day hospital care is rapidly disappearing from the map when it should be AT THE VERY TOP OF THE AGENDA

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY has been touted around for half a century. It was trail blazed as a cost cutting initiative and the human rights part was never more than PR.Hosptitals and consultants are the hub around which care should be constructed and centrally directed from Whitehall.Non clinical managers-the bane of the NHS need downsizing

CONSULTANTS are trained for many years. Most are very good but with too heavy case loads they have to rely on the judgements of others e.g.nurses,social workers, ots etc.who can have all kinds of blindspots and biases.Carers needn'd be afraid to insist on having their views heard. The lower they are usually the thicker they are and see 'improvement'everywhere

Public perceptions of mental illness aren't all they're cracked up to be. Mental health needs to be made an A level option asap. IF YOUR THROWN IS A CARER AT THE DEEP END BEWARE!This happened to me thirty years ago and if I hadn't spent the previous decade reading psychoanalysis I wouldn't have had a clue.

I just published my new book, Disco Hypnotic, which is all about the human mind. Information about it can be found at DiscoHypnotic.com. Any comments or review would be appreciated.

Good to see that Brenda Williams has becomme one of the new service-user Governors for the Camden & Islington NHS Foundation Trust. Perhaps now we will see some action in those boring Governor meetings.
